Q: What the hell is an Afroskull?
A: It’s the long lost soundtrack
to a 70's horror porno flick performed by a rock
band.
Q: What?
A: You heard me.
Q: Okay, you don’t have to get
angry.
A: I’m always angry.
Q: You’ve been around for a while.
How come I’ve never heard of you?
A: We were living in New Orleans,
destroying Southern clubs and leaving a trail of demoralized
bands in our wake.
Q: And now?
A: Now we’re back where we
belong, in N.Y.M.F.C.
Q: Is the band any different now that
you’re living in New York?
A: After returning to New York we started playing without
a regular horn section for the first time - getting back
to a stripped-down, raw power sound. However, now that we have a new NYC based horn section, we're getting back to a stripped-down, raw power sound... with a horn section.
Q: Can I read some pull quotes about
you?
A: Knock yourself out.
"You've got power up there - and
it's funky too!"
- Leo Nocentelli of the Meters
“When Afroskull gets started up, they unleash a powerful giant .
. . Unlike any other funk band in New Orleans, the ‘Skull produces
a gritty, dark metal sound that can keep the house rocking the entire
night.”
- Offbeat Magazine, New Orleans
“Afroskull is one of the most promising young bands
on the scene -- by virtue of how hard they rock . . . Guitarist Joe Scatassa’s
muscular guitar lines and solos differentiate Afroskull from its peers
. . . [the band] sounds like a cross between a Curtis Mayfield score and
a James Bond soundtrack.”
- The Gambit Weekly, New Orleans
“This is hard-core hard-bop with a thick,
walloping sound that would certainly get you evicted if you cranked this
stuff up higher than a 5 or 6 on your volume dial. Afroskull churns out
intense funk-sludge that takes no prisoners.”
- Where Y’At Magazine, New Orleans
