CD REVIEW - Monster For The Masses
Oh Boy! Monster For The Masses is attacking my brain! And my speakers! The
last time I blew my fuse, George Bush was president, hmmm... Afroskull's
latest came out just in time for halloween. The ominous Afroskull symbol
on the cover, as well as the image of Godzilla attacking downtown New Orleans,
shows that these freaks mean business. This group of six instrumentalists
invited a slew of special guests to pump up their wicked groove that is
of a hybrid of Tower of Power, Maceo Parker, The Ohio Players, Galactic
and Funkadelic, but with a distinct heavy metal attitude. This is hard-core
hard-bop with a thick, walloping sound that would certainly get you evicted
if you cranked this stuff up higher than 5 or 6 on your volume dial. Afroskull
churns our intense funk-sludge that takes no prisoners. I especially like
Earl Scioneaux's wicked organ sound that evokes some of the effects utilized
by Miles Davis in his early 70's fusion period. Monster For The Masses boasts
solid production qualities and tight, structured horn arrangements that
rollick over the funky rhythm section. If you're already a fan of Afroskull
then you'll be mightily impressed with Monster For The Masses. If you haven't
checked them out yet, then you're in for an exciting surprise. They rock.
