THE GAMBIT WEEKLY
THURSDAY
Afroskull CD-Release party at Tipitina's
Rising from the ashes of the Flavor Kings, Afroskull is one of the most
promising young jazz/funk bands on the scene-by virture of how hard they
rock. Sounds strange, but it's guitarist/composer Joe Scatassa's muscular
guitar lines and writing solos that differentiate Afroskull from its peers.
A full horn section - including Clarence Johnson III and Nightcrawler Jason
Mingledorff - on Afroskull's new CD, Monster for the Masses, provides
a swirling, sometimes-dissonant backdrop that sounds like a cross between
a Curtis Mayfield score and a James Bond soundtrack, then Scatassa and organist
Matt Barone jump in and the band starts thrashing like the Red Hot Chili
Peppers. The production values on the CD are strong throughout as well,
and Afroskull pulls off the Godzilla motif for the whole ride, from the
packaging to the creative "radio transmissions." Now their Afroskull-does-Black
Sabbath cover shows make sense.
Admission $5. Showtime 10 p.m.
