Dubbed "AfroSabbath" by it's fans, the first 'Afroskull Does Black Sabbath' show took place in June of 2000 before an audience of rabid funkateers and headbangers at the Mermaid Lounge in New Orleans. The set included choice Black Sabbath material from their first five albums arranged Afroskull style: a four-piece rhythm section, a four-piece horn section and percussion. It was so well recieved that the idea was revived for Halloween weekend of the following year, expanding from one set to two. For Afroskull however, events preceding the show were starting to spell disaster. Full rehearsals were almost non-existant, getting a nine-piece band together in the same room proved to be impossible. The lead trumpet player cancelled two days before the gig and had to be replaced last minute. The trombonist was driving straight from Memphis to New Orleans on the day of the gig. Most all of the planned guest vocalists fell through - And then in the early morning the day of the gig, drummer Jason Isaac came down with food poisoning.
Despite these foreboding signs, the band converged on the Mermaid Lounge and delivered. John Paul Schaffer (Cosmic Arc), who was planned to only guest sing two songs, stepped up and became the lead vocalist for the entire night. The horn section was finally assembled last-minute, and Jason Isaac - pale and nauseated from his all day bout with food-borne illness, managed to deliver one of his best perfomances.
Aside from some techinical and performance issues, this bootleg captures the absolute raw and absurd nature of what was unleashed on the Mermaid Lounge.
It was mixed on the fly to 2-track (DAT) by Mermaid Lounge house engineer Clint Montz while he was simultaneously working the house mix. A challening feat - separate boards for each mix were in two different parts of the club! The EQ for the choice songs we're then tweaked by Afroskull engineer Brook Sutton. Please note that some audio distortions that exist were present on the source tape.
Horn arrangements by Joe Scatassa & Bill Richards (Tracks 3 & 6) |
